Community News

We would like to extend an invitation for a special event taking place that will be held on Saturday, September 14, Let’s Move! Columbia Game Day. The City of Columbia has actively taken on the issue of childhood obesity in our community. In an effort to address this issue effectively, the City has become a Let’s Move! city. Let’s Move! is the initiative started by First Lady Michelle Obama and it is dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams.

Since childhood obesity is an epidemic in our local community, We are contacting you so that the wellness and physical activities being offered at this event can be shared with the youth in your community. To kick off the event, we would like to have a bike ride that begins at W.A. Perry Middle School and ends at Drew Park – Green Space, which is adjacent to Drew Wellness Center, 2101 Walker Solomon Way. We will have various ‘old school’ game stations for everyone to enjoy, such as Simon says, kickball, hopscotch and more. For entertainment, we are also inviting high school band members, cheerleaders and step groups to perform. Health screenings for adults and children will be available, and information booths for the parents to learn more about various options for after school activities. The final event will be our Celebrity Flag Football Competition.

Let's Move! is focused on putting children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years. As a Let’s Move! city, Columbia has committed to implementing programs and procedures to ensure our children have a healthy start in life. In order to expand this effort, we are asking that you and your neighbors share this Let's Move! Game Day information with your contacts.

Columbia has made significant strides as a Let’s Move! city, but we need participation from the community in order to take this program to the next level for our youth. Please join this nationwide movement that is dedicated to creating a healthier lifestyle for the youngest among us.
Thank you for all that you do to enhance the lives of the children in our community.
