The Nutcracker Performance

Forest Lake hosted some special visitors last Thursday, December 12, 2013.  Some of our guests included our RSD2 Superintendent Dr. Debra Hamm, school board members James Manning and Melinda Anderson, Director of Academic Services Nancy Gregory, representatives from the State Department of Education, State Senator Joel Lourie,  State Representative Beth Bernstein, SIC and PTO chairmen, and numerous principals and teachers from across South Carolina.   It was a great visit for both guests and members of the Forest Lake family.

Parents and Guardians:

Richland School District Two receives funds under the Impact Aid Program. To apply for funding through Impact Aid, our district must conduct a “true count” each year to identify the number of federally connected students.  Federally connected students are children of active duty uniformed services personnel, children who live on federal property, and children whose parents work on federal property. The Impact Aid Program funds become a part of Richland School District Two’s general operating budget and are critical to maintaining high standards for educational excellence. Impact Aid Survey forms were distributed to students in kindergarten through grade 12. Please be sure to complete a separate survey form for each school-aged student in your household and return to your child’s school as soon as possible.  The information provided on the Impact Aid Survey form is confidential. It is available only to school officials and will be used solely to complete our request for Impact Aid funds under Title VII of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

If you need another copy or the Spanish version of the form, please notify the school or your child's teacher.   Thank you.

News from Global Connections

Second graders enjoyed a visit from Mr. Yu who is from Taiwan. He shared his culture with us and we learned a lot! Students were engaged in a Lantern Festival riddle contest and asked questions about Mr. Yu's culture. Did you know that it is a tradition in Taiwan when you lose a tooth, you must drop it in the trash can as straight as you can? Otherwise, the belief is that you will grow rotten teeth!

What's New at NASA's Space Place Website

The Space Place isn't just a great place to find material for formal school lessons, it also has exciting hands-on activities and fun interactive Web games for after school, too. Check out the Do and Play menus and start planning your after school activities today.

What's New? Space Volcanoes
Did you know that there are volcanoes all around our solar system? From the dormant volcanoes of Mars to the mysteriously active cryovolcanoes of Saturn’s moon Enceladus, there’s a whole lot of cool volcanism in our solar system. Space Place has a new “Space Volcano Explorer” that lets students and teachers alike navigate through the solar system to find images and descriptions of some of the coolest volcanic features around. Check it out at http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/volcanoes. Want to learn more about volcanoes? Check out its new companion article “What is a Volcano?”http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/volcanoes2.

Spotlight on Solar Fun
The sun is vitally important for literally every aspect of life, yet many students and educators know very little about how it actually works. Space Place’s newest Web game, “Solar Tricktionary,” aims to fix that in characteristically silly fashion. In this game, the student is given a term to define and four possible answers. Three of the answers are hilariously incorrect. Obviously solar wind is not “what happens when the sun eats too many beans,” but at least students will be entertained as well as educated as they follow a chain of incorrect answers to the correct one. http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/solar-tricktionary.

Spotlight on Comets
With Comet ISON fast approaching its brightest stage in our night sky in late November, now’s a great opportunity to teach a little something about why scientists care about comets in the first place. One big reason is that the water in our oceans may have come from the ice that makes comets. Space Place’s article “Thirsty? Have a Comet!” explains why scientists think this could be the case and how incredibly precise telescopes can actually identify subtle chemical clues to figure out where these ocean-forming comets could have come from. http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/comet-ocean/.

For Out of School Time
Figure out what’s inside a closed box by creating a handmade topographic map of its contents. This clever activity is a fun way to keep students entertained and educated outside of the classroom. Have your students challenge each other to figure out what each of them put inside their boxes. As they get more and more invested, they will become intimately familiar with how topographic maps work. Use an important lesson that feels like a fun game. Take a look:http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/topo-bear/.

Our entire school community, including parents and veterans attended and the veterans were recognized during the program.

Forest Lake's Teacher of the Year, Mr. Kevin Durden, also a veteran, introduced the other veterans in attendance and encouraged students to participate in Operation Gratitude-writing letters to Servicemen, Veterans, and Wounded Warriors.

History of Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education and a personal commitment to live drug free lives.
Red Ribbon Week also commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and children safe.

Metric Week
October 6-12, 2013

Nanotechnology is now one of the standards in education. Using the conventional language of science, students need to be able to describe the size of a nanometer and make size comparisons of nano-sized objects with other small objects. To accomplish this, students must be familiar with atoms, molecules, and cells. Students also need to have knowledge of basic units of the metric system and prefixes, as well as the ability to manipulate exponential and scientific notation. We have included a short test on measurement and nanotechnology with our metric packet in 2013.

We think it is important that everyone is  notified of Metric Week 2013 in South Carolina. Information on all of the above can be found at the following site:
http://www.artsandsciences.sc.edu/cse See Other Programs then click the “Metric” link.
