Service Learning Project

Forest Lake will again partner with Richland Northeast High School in their school-wide service project H.O.P.E. for the Holidays. H.O.P.E. stands for Helping Other People Everywhere. One of the major components of H.O.P.E. for the Holidays is the annual canned food drive. The goal this year is 20,000 cans. Forest Lake will be collecting canned food items from November 26, 2012 to December 7, 2012. Thank you for taking part in this project and helping others in our community!

Geo-Geniuses!

4th & 5th Grade National Geographic Bee

We are excited to see students involved in the preliminary rounds of the GEO BEE! Students have completed Round Four and will begin Round Five next week. The top 4th and 5th grade students completing 5 weekly quizzes will meet in a school-level bee in December during Global Connections.

Practice your skills and get ready for the final round!! Everyone can test their geography knowledge at www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee, or by downloading the National Geographic GeoBee Challenge app for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, Android, or Nook Color. Take time to review your skills during Thanksgiving break. Good luck!

The school-level GeoBee is the first step for a 4th-8th grade student to compete for a $25,000 college scholarship at the National GeoBee in Washington, D.C. May 2013. The winner will advance to the next level of competition, a written examination to determine invitees to the South Carolina State Competition in March 2013. The top South Carolinian will advance to the national level.

The 2012 GeoBee is organized by National Geographic and sponsored by Google. The National Geographic Society is one of the world’s largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations, founded in 1888 to “increase and diffuse geographic knowledge.” The Society’s ongoing mission is to inspire appreciation of diverse world cultures, enthusiasm for scientific exploration, and careful management of Earth’s resources.

Our Veterans' Day Assembly was so patriotic and well done.  The chorus performed flawlessly and our soloist are very talented.  Lt. Colonel Ousey, husband of our own 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Ousey, read 'American's White Table'.  As he read, a student placed the objects on a table.  The children listened and you could hear a pin drop!  They were so impressed.  The highlight of the assembly was the gathering of our visitors who have served our country.  They introduced themselves and the branch of service they were in.  On sad note, we missed Grandpa Jones and Mr. Birdwell!

Olympic Day

We had a great Olympic Day.  The weather was perfect and everything moved along without any problems.  Look for pictures from the day on our 2012-2013 Photo Gallery and in our web page photo rotator.
Veterans' Day Assembly
To honor those who serve our country, an important Veterans' Day Assembly will be held in the gym on Monday, November 12 at 8:45. Chorus students should check in with their homeroom teacher and report to the gym at 8:00. There will be no Forest Lake Today broadcast as we will begin with the Pledge of Allegiance in the gym.

Parents and Guardians,
Tuesday, November 6, is a school holiday.  School will resume on Wednesday, November 7.  You may want to consider taking your child(ren) with you to the polls.   We've talked about elections, we've participated in elections, and this would be a real life experience for your child(ren).  What better way for them to see democracy in action and encorage them to be good citizens when they are adults.  What do you think?

Also, there will be no chorus on Tuesday of this week.  Both 4th and 5th grade chorus will be  practicing at their regular times on Thursday of this week.
