Help Forest Lake raise money for our students!

Your vote makes a difference!

This year, Target will give money to schools all over the country for one simple act: a vote.  Our school needs just 25 votes to earn a $25 donation from Target.   But that's only the beginning. For each additional vote, our school will get $1 more.  So please remember that , although the gesture is small, the rewards are potentially huge.   Go to this link and vote for our school once a week through September 21 or until Target has given away all $5 million.   Tell your friends and family members to vote!

Collect Boxtops for Education!
General Mills launched Box Tops for Education in 1996 on its cereal boxes. Since then, the program has given more than $400 million to schools across the country. Today, 30,000 schools participate in this nationwide fundraising program. New products are being added to the program constantly, so keep your eye out for the logo on your favorite products.

Grab your scissors and keep an eye out for the Box Tops for Education logo on the products you use every day. Scan the shelves at the grocery store and consider switching to Box Top brands if the products you purchase don't participate. Participating companies and product lines include General Mills, Green Giant, Totino's, Pillsbury, Old El Paso, Ziploc, Hefty, Juicy Juice, Betty Crocker and many more.
Once you've finished with the product, clip the Box Top before you throw the product away. Be sure to look over the whole box: Some packages offer bonus Box Tops. Simply send the clipped Box Tops into school with your child. They can be pasted on the monthly collections sheets or simply put into a plastic bag.  Make sure your student’s name is on the box tops so they can be recognized on Forest Lake Today.
Start clipping Box Tops for Education. Hundreds of products participate in the program, and you probably already have several in your pantry, freezer and fridge. For every Box Top you clip, your child's school will receive 10 cents. That may not sound like a lot, but it adds up quickly. Each school can receive up to $20,000 per school year from clipped Box Tops.

We also participate in Campbell’s Labels for Education.
Labels for Education a fun and easy program where families and members of the community work together to “Earn Free Stuff” for their school!  By collecting UPCs and beverage/sauce caps from over 2,500 participating products our school earns points that can be redeemed for Arts, Athletics, and Academics merchandise.
From soup, cereal and snacks to dairy products, beverages and food storage – your kitchen’s probably full of eligible Labels for Education® items. Get clipping and start earning free stuff for your school!  Just place them in a plastic bag with your name and teacher’s name and bring them to the Media Center.  We will recognize your contribution on Forest Lake Today!

We would like our Forest Lake family and friends to know that when our school attended the Reduced Gravity Opportunity in February of 2012, our district did a story about our experience.  Adam Ginsburg, our video specialist, created a video using clips from the students doing the experiments in the classroom, our trip to Houston, and then our sessions after we came back to the school. The video was entered in the Television Programming State Competition in South Carolina.  Adam won first place in South Carolina for “Forest Lake Elementary’s Zero Gravity NASA Experiment” Video.  South Carolina then entered the video in the National Television Programming, where Adam received an Honorable Mention for Distinguished Achievement in the Category of Video casting/Video streaming.  We are so proud of Adam and his awards and we wanted to share our exciting news with everyone! We are attaching a picture of his awards and the link to his video.

Community News

We would like to extend an invitation for a special event taking place that will be held on Saturday, September 14, Let’s Move! Columbia Game Day. The City of Columbia has actively taken on the issue of childhood obesity in our community. In an effort to address this issue effectively, the City has become a Let’s Move! city. Let’s Move! is the initiative started by First Lady Michelle Obama and it is dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams.

Since childhood obesity is an epidemic in our local community, We are contacting you so that the wellness and physical activities being offered at this event can be shared with the youth in your community. To kick off the event, we would like to have a bike ride that begins at W.A. Perry Middle School and ends at Drew Park – Green Space, which is adjacent to Drew Wellness Center, 2101 Walker Solomon Way. We will have various ‘old school’ game stations for everyone to enjoy, such as Simon says, kickball, hopscotch and more. For entertainment, we are also inviting high school band members, cheerleaders and step groups to perform. Health screenings for adults and children will be available, and information booths for the parents to learn more about various options for after school activities. The final event will be our Celebrity Flag Football Competition.

Let's Move! is focused on putting children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years. As a Let’s Move! city, Columbia has committed to implementing programs and procedures to ensure our children have a healthy start in life. In order to expand this effort, we are asking that you and your neighbors share this Let's Move! Game Day information with your contacts.

Columbia has made significant strides as a Let’s Move! city, but we need participation from the community in order to take this program to the next level for our youth. Please join this nationwide movement that is dedicated to creating a healthier lifestyle for the youngest among us.
Thank you for all that you do to enhance the lives of the children in our community.

Attention parents and friends of Forest Lake Elementary Technology Magnet School!

We are not sending an Eagle News newsletter home each month for this school year.  Instead we will post information to our Eagle Updates blog.  When you click on the blog, you will see an email box at the top of the blog.   Put in your email address, press enter then type in the word you see in squiggly letters.  You will then get an email from FeedBurner asking you to confirm the subscription by clicking on the link.

This will enable you to get an email with a snapshot of what has been posted to the blog.  You will get only 1 email per day even if 10 new items are added!  If no new items are posted, you will not get an email that day.

We feel that this will be a better, more up to date way of keeping you informed.  You will still get a grade level newsletter every Friday but for current, school wide information sign up for our Eagle Update blog.

Click on this link to go to our blog and sign up today.   Tell your friends and family to sign up.
